SADDLE EXPLAINER #4
FRONT GUSSETS
Front gussets are the stitched sections at the front of the saddle panels, just below the tree points They create extra space at the front of the panel that allows for additional flocking to be used to create extra depth in this area. Their purpose is to influence how the front of the panel sits against the horse.
On some horses, additional depth through the front gusset provides improved support and more consistent contact, particularly where there is natural hollowing behind the shoulder or a change in topline shape. On others, a shorter or slimmer front gusset may be more appropriate to maintain close, even contact.
Front gussets do not change the tree or the head plate. They work as part of the panel to refine balance and support. as with the rear gussets, it is about proportion and suitability for the individual horse This small structural feature has a meaningful influence on balance and stability.
